AtLantis AtLand is a staged operatic work devised for Silver Strand beach on Sherkin Island as a collaged soundscape of live and processed vocal sounds, electronics, and field recordings taken on the island. In this hydrofeminist work, immersive incantations sweep like the incoming tide, with siren songs and radio signals woven into the rocky shore’s ancient landscape. The work emerged from field work and a sound workshop on Sherkin for islanders and art students through experimentation with objects, singing and breath work, and tonal recording based on the practice of renowned composer and humanitarian Pauline Oliveros. 

AtLantis AtLand features originally composed music by Stephanie Lamprea and Alistair MacDonald, existing compositional material by Pauline Oliveros, Jason Eckardt, and Kurt Rhode, and two poems written by Federico García Lorca and Donna Masini.  AtLantis AtLand is co-created and devised by Stephanie Lamprea, Jesse Jones and Alistair MacDonald with scenography and design by Sara Murphy, and costumes by Alison Conneely. It is performed by soprano Stephanie Lamprea, electronic musician Alistair MacDonald, and the Sherkin Tonal Choir. Additional movement advice was provided for Stephanie Lamprea by Butoh dance artist Paul Michael Henry.

'Strange, otherworldly sounds drift across the beach as Open Ear’s most ambitious commission to date prepares for the day... That sensation deepens on Silver Strand beach during AtLantis AtLand (that commission we were just talking about!), a remarkable site-specific work unfolding across rocks, cliffs and shoreline. Combining live and processed vocals, electronics and field recordings captured on Sherkin itself, the performance feels inseparable from its environment.

Soprano Stephanie Lamprea’s voice rises and dissolves into the landscape while immersive sound design turns the Atlantic coastline into an active participant... creating an experience where mythology, ecology and memory converge. Siren songs mingle with radio transmissions. The tide becomes part of the score. It’s one of those rare performances that fundamentally alters how you perceive a place.'
