HIDDEN DOOR FESTIVAL: ANTHROPOCENIC GARDEN
31 May - 4 June
The former Scottish Widows complex (15 Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh)
Tickets and information here
Stephanie creates and headlines Anthropocenic Garden, a multidisciplinary environment for the 2023 Hidden Door festival, in collaboration with Tom W. Green, Oana Stanciu, Penny Chivas, Sonia Killmann, Katherine Wren, Richard Scholfield, and Richard Craig. In the Anthropecenic Garden, songs of the Earth are evoked and imagined through natural soundscapes and the human voice interfaced with electronics. Images of creatures and beings once extinct are reanimated through projections, and our sense of space is activated through dance and movement. We ask ‘what does it mean to witness and interact with our land?’ What is real and what is artificial? And bucolic as it may be, this scene is anthropocenic – among the lavish growth, witness also the harm done by our species, via pollution, construction and deconstruction, which has placed our earth on its last leg. By making contact with nature, are we connecting, or are we destroying?

AMBLE SKUSE: DIVERGENT SOUNDS
14 May
Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre, Belvedere Rd, London SE1 8XX)
Tickets and information here
Stephanie Lamprea performs Divergent Sounds, a new work for voice, electronics, and chamber orchestra composed by Amble Skuse and played by City of London Sinfonia.
The composer’s works are based on a series of focus groups with neurodivergent people, and have been produced in collaboration with a neurodivergent steering panel. The soundscapes weave together musical interpretations of neurodivergent perceptions and experiences with recorded excerpts of voices from the focus groups. The Divergent Sounds project explores ways in which neurodivergent people's brains may work differently, and the strengths and challenges that come with being neurodivergent in a neurotypical world. The discussions and themes that emerged throughout the project were reviewed by dramaturg Jen McGregor and composer Amble Skuse. Divergent Sounds is a collaboration between King’s College London and City of London Sinfonia. A recording of the piece will be available to watch after the performance.

ALBUM RELEASE: 14 RÉCITATIONS
10 February 2023 via New Focus Recordings - Album Information Page here
14 Récitations is a solo album of Georges Aperghis’ 14 Récitations (1977-78), a concert-length avant-garde song cycle for unaccompanied female voice. Abandoning traditional use of text, the 14 Récitations set phonemes and vocal sounds with atonality, extended vocal techniques, puzzles, and repetitions. Throughout the opus, the listener witnesses a woman attempting in many ways to speak, but not being understood, and thus trapped in her trauma. “We see and hear a singer realizing a musical score, but at the same time we witness somebody who can’t speak properly…” Aperghis writes. “That is the human dimension of this work. We see people in their daily life struggle, people who are not very healthy, people with trouble expressing themselves - elusive mental portraits en miniature.” The resulting work is an ode to the dynamism and humanity of the voice, but it is also a manifestation of the woman’s complex journey of personal authenticity in a patriarchal world.

Reviews: Opera News, PopMatters.com, The Road to Sound, Take Effect
Listen: Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music
Quaking Aspen sets poetry and sounds of the natural world to unaccompanied voice, with words written by female poets from the 19th through 21st centuries. Placing text at the forefront, each poem is first spoken, and then sung to mesmerizing and distinctive musical interpretations. Moving through music of Jason Eckardt, Wang Lu, Kurt Rohde, James May, George Gianopoulos, and Hannah Selin, the listener is met with vibrant and vulnerable interpretations of text, soaring vocalises, and mercurial acrobatics abound.

LA OPERACION: REVERBERATED
September 28th // 8PM
Roulette Intermedium (509 Atlantic Avenue / Brooklyn, NYC)
Tickets and info here.
In 2019, composer and bassist Nick Dunston premiered the multi-movement composition La Operación at Roulette. The chamber-opera-in-progress is an abstract digestion of the composer’s exploration of a historical phenomenon involving necropolitics in Puerto Rico imposed by American colonialism and capitalism. Two years later, after/during a devastating global pandemic and significant life shifts, this piece is revisited, developed, mutated, and reverberated. Another angle of the process is examined. Patience, time, and reflection (both internal and external) are crucial elements of this iteration. Less so a “sequel,” La Operación: Reverberated is more of an alternate-reality-based inversion. A new dynamic instrumentation and ensemble of improvisers manifests this phase to actualization. Joining Dunston for this performance will be Stephanie Lamprea (voice), Clifton Joey Guidry III (bassoon), Anna Webber (tenor saxophone), Weston Olencki (trombone and electronics), and Ches Smith (drum set and percussion).
