.............yes, but why the name "Monotreme"?
THE SERIOUS ONE: The species of the order Monotremata (the platypus and a few different kinds of echidna) are the world’s only mammals to lay eggs. At first glance, monotremes seem to be a jumble of characteristics of other animals: the platypus has a beaver’s tail and a duck’s bill; the echidna looks like an anteater with the spines of a hedgehog. Like the bodies of monotremes, the music we perform combines familiar elements and sounds in a way that is new, surprising, and just a little bit weird.
JUST FOR FUN: The order of monotremes consists of the echidna (also known as the “spiny anteater”) and the platypus (described by early Australian colonists as a “water mole” and by Twitter user @meglegbird as “God’s mistake.”) Our music aims to elicit a reaction similar to seeing a platypus or echidna: a little bit “aww,” a little bit “uhhh,” and a little bit “why?”
